Osborn High School Fallout shelter.

Capacity numbers are missing.
My parents went to this school back in the early 70's.
I will add more info when it's becomes available.

A friend of my mother used to work at this school.
I asked him about it and this is his reply........

"The fallout shelter in Osborn was IMMENSE!

Normally the Air handling tunnels were what was used in the schools and they would easily hold the 3000 or so children and staff.

But at Osborn, the Building design was such that virtually the entire building footprint underground was accessible and could be used if needed.

We are talking about many thousands that could be sheltered from radiation due to the design. No windows and 20 or more feet underground in an area the size of the school(almost). There were walkways to allow the Engineers(me) to traverse from one mechanical room to another. But the majority of the area was bare earth.
It was lighted, but not heated.


Food and water were another matter. Water was stored in barrels, chlorinated to accommodate the expected building occupancy. Emergency rations and sanitation supplies(the empty water barrels were to be used as toilets with seats, chemicals, lids, etc) and medical supplies as well as radiation meters were stored at each school.

Sometime in the 70's the plan was abandoned for some reason and the practice was eliminated. I dont know exactly when or why.

I do remember having to throw away all of the emergency food and drain the stored water barrels and dispose of them."
