A tumulus is a kind of mausoleum used in the era of the Roman Empire. The one in Nickenich was found there in 1931. The stones came from the quarry near Kretz. About 70% of the tumulus were found. The fundament has a diameter of about 7 m and the height is about 2.5m. It is dated in the first century BC. The wall has the text
CONTVINDA ESSVCONIS F[iliae]
SILVANO ATEGNISSA F[ilio]
H[eredes] EX TES[tamento] F[ecerunt]
cut into it. THe original tumulus can be seen in the museum in Bonn. Here in Nickenich a reconstruction of it can be visited.
