"The Lion & Snake is one of Lincoln's oldest public houses, known as the “Ram” in the early 18th century it then became the Lyon. In 1741 the “Snake” was added to the title in a lease granted to Clement Wood, Governor of the Castle, of the Red Lyon and Snake. For a short time it became the Earl of Scarborough’s Arms but by the late 18th century was named The Lion and Snake."
