Visitors book in St Wilfrid's church, South Muskham.
"There is evidence that there was a stone built church on this site pre - Conquest. St Wilfrid’s is a stone-built, Grade 1 Listed building comprising; Nave with aisles, Chancel, West tower and South porch. The North aisle is narrow, approx. 4ft wide and almost certainly dates from the 14th C, the North door is 13th C and was most likely moved when the North aisle was added.
The church roof is modern with slates; the main chancel roof being completely re-slated in 2004. The Tower clearly shows three separate dates, the lower part of the tower is 13th C, the second stage 14thC and in the 15thC the tower was unroofed and a lofty belfry added, housing three bells.
The church organ was built locally, by Harston’s of Newark. The Church clock is wound manually and is in good repair, the bells are have recently been out of use, happily recent investigations carried out mean ringing can safely be resumed. Pews are fitted throughout the nave for seating in the Church. A Children’s area was created at the rear of the church in the South aisle.
A recent funding campaign raised funds to install a small tea bar and a disabled toilet facility within the vestry of this beautiful ancient church.
The tower has just undergone extensive repairs and repointing and repairs to roof have been completed."
