This sphinx is on top of a WWI war memorial that commemorated the men of the Lancashire Fusiliers regiment who died in WWI.

The memorial is in the form of a Cenotaph surmounted by the carving of the sphinx.
The memorial has an inscription part of which is a list of countries that the regiment fought in. Immediately underneath the Sphinx is the word Egypt.
