The River Irwell
"The River Irwell is a 39-mile (63 km) long river which flows through the Irwell Valley in North West England. Its source is at Irwell Springs on Deerplay Moor, approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of Bacup. It forms the boundary between Manchester and Salford and empties into the River Mersey near Irlam." link

The Bridge
Although the bridge was built by Captain H A Clowes at his own expense it was always a public bridge. He was a rich local landowner and the bridge gave him better access to his estate as well as improving communications for everyone else.

There are two very worn stone plaques on the bridge parapet each on opposite sides of the road.

The best view of the bridge is from footpaths on the banks of the River Irwell. Parking is available at shops next to the bridge at N 53 30 2.75 W 2 16 40.64
