Born in Stateburg, Sumter County, SC: October 7, 1821
Graduated from West Point: 1842
Served at Cavalry School in Carlisle, PA. and wed Sarah Gibson: 1850
With the secession of South Carolina, he followed his home state and became Col. of the SC 1st Infantry Regiment and commanded the defense of Charleston Harbor: 1861
Promoted to Brig. Gen. and transferred to Florida where he was wounded in the fighting at Santa Rosa Island: 1861
Later transferred to Virginia and distinguished himself as a brigade commander during the Peninsula Campaign: 1862
Here he earned the sobriquet "Fighting Dick"
He served in all the major campaigns with the Army of Northern Virginia progressing in rank to command a corps. He made notable contributions at 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, where he again was wounded, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor.
After the war he returned to his home state and was appointed State Phosphate Agent. He died in Beaufort, SC on June 25, 1879.
