The Riverside Walkway is located on a raised river bank on the River Irwell. The land next to the river acts as a flood basin.
The land around the Irwell has a history of flooding which occurred again in 2015
The land is used as a local recreation area, but in the case of heavy rain and flooding, gates on the river can be opened to flood the adjoining land to protect the nearby houses. The information board has details of the species of flora and fauna that may be spotted in each of the four seasons.
