Daly Avenue
Heritage Conservation District

This heritage conservation district was originally part of
the lands of Louis T. Besserer, a veteran
of the war of 1812 and a member
of the House of Assembly whose home
was at 149 Daly Avenue. The area was
developed in two stages, first in the
1870's and then later in the early 1900's.
It has been the home of many senior
Federal civil servants, as well as the
Canadian poet Archibald Lampman.

This district is interesting for its
array of workman's cottages, middle
class dwellings, and other more
elaborate houses such as 192 Daly Avenue
and 157-159 Daly Avenue. Many buildings
incorporate an eclectic blend of
architectural styles in an attempt to
achieve uniqueness. There are also some
impressive examples of row housing,
particularly Philomene Terrace at 363-383
Daly Avenue. Also noteworthy is the
remarkable number of properties
designated individually under the
Ontario Heritage Act, for example
"Winterholme" at 309-311 Daly Avenue.
