In the Christian religion, Mary, the Jewish daughter of Judea, is the mother of Jesus of Nazareth. Following the death and resurrection of the latter, his disciples recognize him as the Messiah or Christ and transmit his history and his teachings, which gives birth to Christianity. For Christians, Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Messiah announced in the Old Testament and sent to men to save them.

In the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, Mary is the object of a particular worship, superior to the simple worship rendered to saints and angels, called the worship of hyperdulia.
