SFB stands for Sender Freies Berlin or Radio Free Berlin, the public radio and television service for West Berlin from 1954 until 2003. In 2003 the station merged with its East German counterpart into RBB (Radio Berlin Brandenburg).
The bear is Berlin's heraldic animal (As a matter of fact, Berlin was originally named Bear-lin). The SFB-Bear (SFB-Bär in German) was the station's mascot, appearing in credits and in cartoons during commercial breaks. In 2001, a 5th grade class at Mercator School in Berlin-Lichterfelde immortalized the bear with this statue. |
