The Saint-Joseph parish of Rivière-des-Prairies was founded in 1834.

The church was built between 1873 and 1875 by Victor Bourgeau. On July 21, 1875, takes place the blessing of the first cornerstone of the church made by Messire P. Leblanc, canon priest of the cathedral. On December 30, 1875, takes place of the blessing of the church.

The church is built in the Gothic neo style.
