Giovanni Battista Niccolini wrote plays and poems in support of the movement to unify Italy. His tomb is marked by a marble statue called Liberty of Poetry that was sculpted by Pio Fedi in 1877. The statue is presumed to be the model for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Fedi created a plaster cast of this sculpture in 1872 whereas Bartholdi began working on his sculpture in 1875.
The pedestal of the Liberty of Poetry contains the inscription:
A G.B. NICCOLINI
TO G.B. NICCOLINI
