The former Armidale School of the Arts is a single storey stuccoed brick Victorian community building with fine cast iron verandah. The building opened in 1863 as School of Arts and Mechanics Institute. Used for early Council meetings. By 1897 had been greatly extended to provide office, library and billiards rooms. In 1915 it became the Armidale Literary Institute housing the municipal library from 1915 to 1954 and became the local folk museum in 1958.
