Manchester's main industry in Vitorian times was cotton and Portland Street was developed in the 1850s with many large warehouses.
At the time it was built it did not extend as far south as the location of this waymark.
The southern side of this junction is a former warehouse converted to office space with an upmarket cafe called Philpotts on the ground floor.
The other side of the junction has a modern building housing a Premier Inn hotel and a casino. This building has a plaque on the side with information about the land upon which the hotel is located.
HUMPHREY BOOTH THE ELDER
These buildings are erected on land forming part of the
original endowment of Humphrey Booth who was born
in Salford in 1580 and set up the Charity of Humphrey
Booth the Elder by a Deed of Feoffment dated 18th
February 1630 to aid poor needy or frail people in Salford.
