Hat Point, elevation 6982', was established as a fire detection point in 1916. The present tower, built in 1948, has had a public observation deck added below the lookout cabin. The tower continues to be staffed every summer, as this is a high fire occurance area. A clear day yields views into 3 states (Oregon, Idaho and Washington). Looking to the east, the land literally drops out from under your feet, as Hell's Canyon of the Snake River is directly below you (definitely worth the long drive out here!).
