Chomoutovské jezero vzniklo pri težbe šterkopísku. Na bývalou pískovnu navazuje pestrá mozaika*mokradu, luk, krovin a lesu. Jezero je bez povrchového prítoku a odtoku, sytí je pouze vývery podzemní vody a v menší míre srážky. Do roku 1990 sloužilo k odberu pitné vody. V letech 1996-2003 zde probehla rozsáhlá revitalizace, byly vybudovány tune a mokrady. Jezero se po ukoncení težby v roce 1968 postupne stalo významnou ornitologickou lokalitou. =========================================================

The Chomoutovské jezero lake was created during the extraction of sandy gravel. The abandoned sandpit is neighboured by a diverse patchwork of wetlands, meadows, shrubs and forests. The lake has no surface inflow nor outlet; it is supplied only by outflows of groundwater and partly also by precipitation. Until the year 1990, it was ušed as a source of drinking water. In the period 1996-2003, large-scale restoration of the lake was carried out with new pools and wetlands being created.

After the abandonment of mining activities in 1968, the lake gradually became an important ornithological site. In the last 20 years, altogether 178 bird species representing 17 orders háve been recorded there. Breeding was confirmed in 73 of them, including 7 critically and highly endangered species. The Velký ostrov island hosts a breeding colony of the Black-headed Gull, currently numbering up to 7000 pairs, together with several pairs of the rare Mediterranean Gull which regularly occur at the site. The Little Bittern and Great Reed Warbler nést in reed beds, the Common Sandpiper on plots of bare ground and the Common Kingfisher in vertical banks. The area is also an important stopover site. So far, 105 species of migrating birds háve been registered there, including e.g. the Northern Pintail, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Eurasian Bittern, Barnacle Goose, Curlew Sandpiper, Black Tern, Black-throated Loon, Osprey and Grey Plover.
