Once CFF became operational, it linked naval headquarters in Ottawa with Allied naval headquarters, ships at sea and other locations as distant as Bermuda and Sierra Leone. Station personnel also intercepted encrypted German, Italian and Russian military and diplomatic communications traffic. When not occupied with other messages, the operators on duty "sniped" - slang for intercepted - other Allied traffic. On one occasion,
they followed, intercepted transmissions between Royal Navy warships in pursuit and the ultimate sinking of the German battleship Bismarck.

Building 136 is the only surviving building of more than four buildings that made up the compound of the Royal Canadian Navy's naval radio station CFF. Before 1940, radio station CFF operated on base at RCAF Station Rockcliffe. The radio station was soon relocated to secured buildings on the Central Experimental Farm.
Significantly, radio station CFF operated the search function to detect new frequencies used by the enemy.
