Idarado San Juan Mountains
Taken on Telluride Daily Planet : Shadows and sunlight paint the ruins of the Tomboy Mine in Savage Basin below Imogene Pass. When the Idarado Mining Company bought out Telluride Mines in the 1950s, the Tomboy mining claims got stitched into Idarado’s vast holdings. Some of those claims still belong to Idarado, which conducts ongoing remediation in the area. Others are now part of the Uncompahgre National Forest. The Idarado Mine has been shut down since 1978, but that doesn’t mean it’s been abandoned. For the past 25 years, ongoing reclamation efforts have taken place, which have been just as important as the mining of metals for WWII. The history of the mine and the ensuing reclamation has been chronicled in a 10-part newspaper series that appeared in the Watch, the Daily Planet’s sister publication. Written and researched by Silverton journalist Samantha Tisdel Wright, the Newmont Mining Corporation project was a “gigantic” undertaking, she said. “‘How am I ever going to get my arms around this,’” she said was her initial reaction. “The scope of the project was as immense as the scope of the mine itself.”
