The ornate Spire of San Domenico was begun in 1656 as a votive offerings to celebrate the end of and deliverance from the plague. It was designed in the Baroque style by Cosimo Fanzago and built by the royal architect Francesco Antonio Picchiati. Construction was suspended in 1680, resumed, and completed in 1737 by the architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. The monument is topped by a by a statue of San Domenico di Guzman (Saint Dominic of Guzman), founder of the Dominican Order.
Dominic was in Caleruega, Spain on August 8, 1170. He studied arts and theology at what is now the University of Palencia. After giving away his possessions he jouned around age twenty-five, Dominic joined the Canons Regular in the Cathedral of Osma, following the rule of Saint Augustine.
In 1215, Dominic sought the approval of Pope Innocent III to begin a new order to meet the needs of urban residents. In 1216 he received approval a founded the The Order of Preachers, O.P., commonly known as the Dominican Order
