" Le nom de Jean de Chatillon a été donné à la place de la cathédrale en hommage à son fondateur. Ce dernier nommé d’abord évêque d’Alet, vers 1142, entra en procès avec l’abbaye de Marmoutiers, près de Tours, qui depuis peu était devenue propriétaire du rocher de Saint-Malo et de son église.
Jean de Chatillon obtint, de 1145 à 1162, plusieurs bulles de différents papes, forçant les moines à abandonner le lieu et l’autorisant à installer son siège épiscopal dans l’église qui devint dès lors la cathédrale de Saint-Malo. Il fonda en outre un chapitre de chanoines réguliers de l’ordre de saint Augustin dont il faisait lui-même partie.
Huit siècles plus tard, les restes de style roman de l’ancien cloître de ces chanoines furent trouvés dans les ruines d’une maison située à l’angle sud-ouest de la cathédrale dont Jean de Chatillon entreprit également la construction.
Dédiée à saint Vincent, martyr du 4e siècle de Saragosse (Espagne), la cathédrale de Saint-Malo a été agrandie du 13e au 18e siècle et surmontée d’une haute flèche néogothique qui fut détruite le 6 août 1944 au début des combats pour la Libération de la ville en août 1944.
La reconstruction de la flèche en 1971 a marqué la fin des travaux de la reconstruction de la cité historique malouine. L’édifice restauré et doté de beaux vitraux contemporains fut inauguré l’année suivante.
La sépulture du découvreur du Canada, Jacques Cartier (Saint-Malo, 1491 – Saint-Malo, 1557) y fut retrouvée en 1949, et les restes de René Duguay-Trouin (Saint-Malo, 1673 - Paris, 1736) y furent rapportés en 1973. "

"The name of Jean de Chatillon was given to the cathedral square in homage to its founder. The latter, first appointed bishop of Alet, around 1142, entered into trial with the Abbey of Marmoutiers, near Tours, who had recently become the owner of the rock of Saint-Malo and its church.
Jean de Chatillon obtained, from 1145 to 1162, several bulls from different popes, forcing the monks to abandon the place and authorizing him to install his episcopal seat in the church which then became the cathedral of Saint-Malo. He also founded a chapter of regular canons of the order of Saint Augustine, of which he was a member.
Eight centuries later, the Romanesque remains of the canons' former cloister were found in the ruins of a house at the southwest corner of the cathedral, which Jean de Chatillon also undertook to build.
Dedicated to Saint Vincent, 4th century martyr of Zaragoza (Spain), the cathedral of Saint-Malo was enlarged from the 13th to the 18th century and surmounted by a high neo-Gothic spire which was destroyed on August 6, 1944 at the start of the fighting for the Liberation of the city in August 1944.
The reconstruction of the spire in 1971 marked the end of the reconstruction of the historic city of Falkland. The restored building with beautiful contemporary stained glass was inaugurated the following year.
