A marble statue which is a allegory for the City of Messina was sculpted in 1856 by Giuseppe Prinzi. It's official name is: "Messina grateful for the sovereign authorization of the free port". It commemorates the 1852 decree by the Bourbon King Ferdinand II that gave the City of Messina the status of a free port.
The statue is a female figure wearing a crown and flowing robes. She is holding the rolled decree in her right hand. Her left hand is missing. On the base is the coat of arms of Messina above a banner that is inscribed MESSINA.
