The USS Mars was the first ship in the Mars class of seven combat resupply vessels. The Mars was commissioned on December 21, 1963 (see 1963 date on bell), and operated from its home port of Oakland, CA until being decommissioned on February 1, 1993. After the ship's retirement from service, the Borough of Mars, Pennsylvania obtained the ship's bell for display in Grand Avenue Park, right in the center of town. The flying saucer is a famous local landmark that is also found here.
