A pair of enormous pylons once carried electricity across the Strait of Messina from Calabria to Sicily to supply power to Sicily.

Two 232-meter tall towers (761') that are set 3646 meters apart were built to carry across electricity across the Strait of Messina to Sicily from 1955 to 1994. One tower is located in Cape Faro on the west side of the Strait of Messina in Sicily the other is in Villa San Giovanni in the Reggio Calabria region on the east side of the Strait.
With the installation of an underwater cable in 1993, the towers became obsolete. They have been declared National Monuments and are preserved today. The tower in Sicily has a staircase with 1250 steps which since 2006 can be climbed to to the top and view the Strait.
