One of many flora and fauna signs along a walking trail that is part of the Estero El Salado, an estuary located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta, which has been declared a protected area with spectacular examples of biodiversity.

The Estero El Salado is an urban eco-reserve comprising 169 hectares, of which approximately 135 correspond to mangrove vegetation and wetlands; the rest is made up by two medium forest remnants bordered by water and underwater vegetation, thorn forest and secondary vegetation.
The estuary is home to over 100 species of birds in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Over 29 amphibians and reptiles have been identified, along with 10 mammal species and a variety of invertebrates and fish characteristic to mangrove areas.
Students from nearby universities help with everything from grounds keeping to guiding a 2 hour public tours, which are offered Monday through Friday at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 3:00 pm.
The beginning of the trail is located 140 meters from the entrance to Estero el Salado. The trail can be done on our own or guided.
Endemic to tropical America, the tabachin is a tree of 10 to 15 m. The flowers are red, orange, yellow and pink growing on the ends of the branches.
