The Northern Cardinal is a hardy bird, considering that it does not migrate south during the winter, but stays in its territory year round. About 8 inches in length, this Cardinal has a black mask on its face and a short cone shaped bill. It is pale brown in colour with reddish tinge in the wings, tail and crest. This is a female as only the males are red. Sitting on its perch, this female Northern Cardinal is wondering what the commotion is all about after a few inches of snow have fallen and the vehicles in front of her are slip-sliding on the frozen street. Having seen enough, she flies away to the wooded area she adopted as her home given the abundance of grasses, thickets and shrubbery available to hide and nest in. She meets with an effusive welcome from her young ones and a beautiful song upon arrival.
