This monarch butterfly is feasting on a daisy like deep purple coneflower. While monarch butterflies do collect nectar from coneflowers on occasion, their preferred flower is the milk weed, which also grows deep purple flowers. Coming from the opposite side is a bee also attracted by the familiar aroma of nectar and pollen. Both butterflies and bees need pollen and nectar from flowers to power their flight and nourish offspring.

Most butterflies only consume liquids. They suck nectar or water through their proboscis, a flexible tube that is attached to their mouth and that they unroll to plunge it into a flower. This video shows some amazing close up views.
