A plaque near the former information center at the Charlton Rest Area dedicated to William Francis Callahan contains a full front portrait of the former Commissioner of Public Works and Chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. The plaque is inscribed:

His son Lt. William F. Callahan was killed in action during World War II. The Callahan Tunnel in Boston is named in his honor. Hence, the reference to knowing adversity in the plaque.
