Glass Globe made by a local glassblower were previously purchased by Auntie Mame 22 to protect her still life morpho butterflies and small skull. Wanting to be a part of her collection of treasured objects, she had a 1/8 wax sculpture created of her for placement in a larger Glass Globe. This wax sculpture was subsequently painted in the colour we now see, that is, a black polk-a-dot on blue cocktail dress, round hat with black ribbons, high heel black shoes and two precious metal bracelets, one on each of her wrists. Proud of the fact that the bright and iridescent blue and black coloured wings of the butterfly matched her dress, she brought it up more than once in future conversations with her guests. As for the presence of the skull in one of the glass globe, it allowed everyone to silently ponder the inescapable fact that life is not eternal.
Drew Mandigo created the first seventeen Downtown Rideau Mural Boxes installed in late 2016, from his Auntie Mame Series. Stunning in their originality, Drew’s works feature digital collages of ladies dressed in 1950’s and 60’s fashions, and are inspired by the spirit of the 1958 film of the same name. Several new pieces were released as part of the 2017 mural box expansion project, including one featuring a lady trapped in a glass dome, surrounded by butterflies, and a unique piece dubbed ‘the upside-down lady’.
