What have we got here, well, by all indications, this lady in a lilac dress, with a net in her right hand and a bivouac of butterflies on her head is a lepidopterist, meaning a peson who studies and collects butterflies. As a lepidopterist, Auntie Mame 13 knew not only that milk-weed plants were the butterflies preferred source of food but that it was sure to attract them to her, and it did. As the saying goes, this lady sure appeared to be as free as a butterfly, as she stood in front of a mural box with colourful drawings of plexippus, you guessed it, Monarch Butterflies.
Drew Mandigo created the first seventeen Downtown Rideau Mural Boxes installed in late 2016, from his Auntie Mame Series. Stunning in their originality, Drew’s works feature digital collages of ladies dressed in 1950’s and 60’s fashions, and are inspired by the spirit of the 1958 film of the same name. Several new pieces were released as part of the 2017 mural box expansion project, including one featuring a lady trapped in a glass dome, surrounded by butterflies, and a unique piece dubbed ‘the upside-down lady’.
