The village Horní Cernošice was first mentioned in 1115. In Horní Cernošice there was built the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary which was first mentioned in 1352 when it served as a parish church. A few farms stood around this church. The villages stood at two important trade routes – the route from Prague to Bechyne and from Prague to Karlštejn Castle.
Cernošice was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War in 1639 when it was burnt to the ground by the Swedish army moving towards Prague. During the war, there was a great decline in population because of the war losses, epidemics and emigration.
In 1862 the railway stations in Cernošice were opened as a part of the new-built railway from Prague to Plzen (Pilsen). The new railway brought about a tourist and building boom. Lidos were founded along the river and many new villas were built. Cernošice became one of the most famous residential and weekend-cottage satellites before. During this time Cernošice started to lose its agricultural character. The development of the towns was stopped during the World Wars. In 1950, the originally separate villages were joined together and named Cernošice.

Horní Cernošice jsou poprvé zmíneny v listine kláštera Kladrubského z roku 1115. Horní Cernošice byly tvoreny nekolika usedlostmi kolem malé návsi pred kostelem. Skrz obce vedly velmi duležité cesty. Jedná se o tzv. pražsko-bechynskou cestu a cestu z Pražského hradu na Karlštejn. Stará košatá lípa, která stála na Vráži až do roku 1930, sloužila jako cestovní ukazatel a ríká se, že pod ní vždy odpocíval král Karel IV. pri svých cestách na Karlštejn.
Nejtežším obdobím si prošly Cernošice v dobe tricetileté války. Roku 1639 je švédský vojevudce Johann Gustafsson Banner dal, podobne jako Zbraslav, vypálit, když jeho armáda táhla na Prahu. V prubehu války došlo k velkému poklesu poctu obyvatel v dusledku válecných ztrát, epidemií a emigrací.
Jednou z nejvýznamnejších událostí v historii Cernošic bylo zavedení železnice. Ta byla otevrena roku 1862 a šlo o jednokolejnou trat z Prahy do Plzne. V této dobe propuká bourlivý výletní a stavební ruch. Podél reky jsou budovány lázne a zacínají se stavet letní vily Pražanu. Tento vývoj je následne utlumen první svetovou válkou. Po jejím skoncení ale propuká znovu a v ješte vetší intenzite. Cernošice se staly jedním z nejproslulejších vilových a chatových satelitu první republiky. Rozvoj mesta byl ale následne opet zastaven válkou.
Horní a Dolní Cernošice tvorily jednu obec od roku 1864. Roku 1920 byly oddeleny. Po válce roku 1950 došlo ke sloucení obcí Horní a Dolní Cernošice[2] a zároven byly pripojeny Dolní Mokropsy. Roku 1969 získaly Cernošice status mesta. Roku 1974 byly oddeleny Dolní Cernošice a pripojeny k Praze 5 – Lipencum.
