The Island of Principe UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covers most of Principe island. This is one of the two islands which make the country, the second smallest in Africa.
In general the visitor will need a local guide to contact the wilderness (and the Biosphere Reserve) here. It's not cheap, for local standards. About 50 Euros for a day out (including the fee for the Park), exploring the nature. This might include spotting the Grey Parrot, a species which is endemic, and other fauna, as well as spectacular waterfalls and other natural highlights.
There are a few official hiking trails but only a couple stand out of the paid-only areas. This is one of them. Its trailhead is located a few hundred meters before the entrance to Bom Bom resort. It's well marked... at least apparently: if it's easy to go in, the hiking marks are placed in such a way that only inwards hikers will spot them. To return the marks are virtually invisible. So, to explore without a guide a proper GPS and adequate experience is advised.
A great introduction to the ecosystem of the island, pure tropical.
By the way, the headquarters of the Island of Principe UNESCO Biosphere Reserve are the most beautiful house in Santo Antonio, the main village (actually, the only) of the island.
