The Clock Tower (or Belfry * municipal) came out of the ground in 1840.grand-street-town hall
(* Belfry: (baffraiz in old French) is a structure of structure intended to support and to make move bells)
Its construction is requested by the inhabitants of the town as early as 1824.
At the time, Sauzé Vaussais hosts a lot of Markets and Fairs whose traders also come from the surrounding communes. They complain of the lack of a clock in the city, forcing them to rush their business believing it is late when it is still early. This is a shortfall for the city and the city council decides first to build a square tower to carry the clock but it is a round tower, above the halls, which is finally chosen (The work is conducted by Bernard Gurs / Architect of Melle).

A l’époque, Sauzé Vaussais accueille beaucoup de Marchés et de Foires dont les commerçants viennent également des communes environnantes. Ceux ci se plaignent de l’absence d’une horloge dans la ville, les forçant à précipiter leurs affaires croyant qu’il se fait tard quand il est encore tôt. C’est un manque à gagner pour la ville et le conseil municipal décide en premier lieu de construire une tour carrée pour porter l’horloge mais c’est une tour ronde, au dessus des halles, qui est finalement choisie (Les travaux sont conduits par Bernard Gurs / Architecte de Melle).
