This airport was built in 1968, when this area was part of Portugal. It was modernized in 2012 by the Portuguese company Mota & Engil (from 1320 m to 1750 m), so its runway could be used by small jet airplanes. The works were concluded in 2015.
The airport is located 180 m above sea level, around 8 km from the capital of the island, Santo António.
Its terminal is old and neglected. Actually there a touch of charm from the old days here. The luggage is checked manually and there is a very informal atmosphere in the terminal.
