A remarkable leader who once resided here, this First World War military nurse and then Assistant Matron-in-Chief was awarded the Royal Red Cross (First Class) in 1917. As Matron-in-Chief of the Royal Canadian Medical Corps during the Second World War, she was responsible for thousands of Army nurses, and assisted in the formation of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Navy nursing services and the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. Colonel Smellie retired in 1944, the first woman to hold this rank. She then guided the Victorian Order of Nurses through a changing healthcare system as Chief Superintendent until 1947.

Cette infirmière militaire de la Première Guerre mondiale puis infirmière-chef adjointe reçoit l’Ordre royal de la Croix-Rouge de 1re Classe en 1917. Infirmière-chef dans le Corps de santé royal canadien pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle est responsable de milliers d’infirmières et contribue à créer les services de soins infirmiers de l’Aviation et de la Marine royale canadienne et le Service féminin de l’Armée canadienne. Première femme promue colonel, Smellie prend sa retraite en 1944 puis guide les Infirmières de l’Ordre de Victoria jusqu’en 1947, durant une période de changement du système de santé. Elle a habité ici.
