"Plus ancienne église de Belgique Consacrée en 697 et reconstruite au IXe siècle, église funéraire, paroissiale et collégiale, elle fut un lieu de pèlerinage à saint Ursmer, l'un des fondateurs de l’abbaye. Son histoire est liée à l’abbaye Saint-Pierre qui fut détruite en 1794 par les troupes révolutionnaires françaises.
Témoin unique du IXe siècle, elle présente un plan en forme de croix latine avec un faux transept à l’ouest, et comprend:
- la nef et le transept, parties les plus anciennes (IXe siècle, période carolingienne)
- la crypte, la tour-porche et le chœur (XIe siècle, période romane).
L’édifice abrite de nombreux sarcophages et dalles funéraires. Les deux plus importants vestiges sépulcraux sont, les sarcophages mérovingiens des saints Ursmer et Ermin. La visite de la crypte romane vous permettra tels les pèlerins du moyen âge, de prier saint Dodon et sainte Renelde respectivement reconnus pour soulager les maux de dos et les maladies de peau.
Au XIe siècle, l’église qui menace ruine est rénovée et élargie. Le chœur et l’ancienne crypte sont reconstruits dans le style roman sous l'abbatiat d'Arnoulde 1077 à 1094, qui y ajoute la tour occidentale avec son petit porche et la chapelle de Saint-Nicolas (chapelle des Fidèles-Trépassés). Les travaux terminés, le prince-évêque de Liège Otbert visite Lobbes et consacre la nouvelle pierre d’autel le 20 janvier 1095.
Au cours des siècles l'édifice va subir des transformations altérant son architecture préromane et romane. La plupart des baies en plein cintre seront refaites en style ogival ; la charpente apparente sera masquée par un plafond du XVIIIe siècle ; la tour occidentale sera coiffée d'abord d'une flèche pyramidale puis d'une couverture en forme de cloche au lieu de la sobre toiture originale en pavillon."

"The oldest church in Belgium consecrated in 697 and rebuilt in the 9th century, funeral, parish and collegiate church, it was a place of pilgrimage to Saint Ursmer, one of the founders of Lobbes Abbey. Its history is linked to the abbey of Saint-Pierre, which was destroyed in 1794 by French revolutionary troops.
A unique witness of the 9th century, it has a Latin cross-shaped plan with a false transept to the west, and includes :
- the nave and transept, the oldest parts (9th century, Carolingian period)
- the crypt, the porch tower and the choir (11th century, Romanesque period).
The building houses many sarcophagi and funeral slabs. The two most important sepulchral remains are the Merovingian sarcophagi of Saints Ursmer and Ermin. The visit to the Romanesque crypt will allow you, like medieval pilgrims, to pray to Saint Dodon and Saint Renelde, respectively known for relieving back pain and skin diseases.
In the 11th century, the church, which threatened to ruin, was renovated and enlarged. The choir and the old crypt were rebuilt in Romanesque style under the Abbey of Arnoulde 1077 to 1094, which added the western tower with its small porch and the chapel of Saint-Nicolas (Chapelle des Fidèles-Trépassés). Once the work was completed, the Prince-Bishop of Liège Otbert visited Lobbes and consecrated the new altar stone on 20 January 1095.
Over the centuries, the building underwent transformations that altered its pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture. Most of the semicircular bays will be redone in ogival style; the exposed framework will be masked by an 18th century ceiling; the western tower will be topped first by a pyramidal arrow and then by a bell-shaped roof instead of the original sober pavilion roof."
