From interpretive on site:
"The Chicago Tree Project is a collaboration between the Chicago Park District and Chicago Sculpture International. Each year, trees all over the city die, many of them as the result of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle. Instead of cutting them all down, artists carve, sculpt, paint, and otherwise modify these trees into vibrant works of public art that can be enjoyed by the community."
From the artist via the Chicago Tree Project website:
"In Nichols Park, I was chosen to carve a tree that was damaged in a storm years ago. I use chainsaws. After seeing the tree in early summer, I submitted two proposals, a wolf and a blue heron. Nichols is a dog friendly park, so a wolf was chosen. People passing by enjoyed the show very much. I stopped work many times to speak with the locals and explain the exercise." (
