The first buildings of Saint-Sauveur Church:
1152 - Following a brief by Pope Eugene II, the monks of the island of Aix undertake the construction of the church Saint Sauveur, initially dedicated to Saint Madeleine, erected in parish by the bishop of Saintes in 1217.
1419 - This first church is destroyed by a fire.
1462 - The new church starts immediately after the fire is enlarged under Louis
XI. It is the "wonder of the city", of Flamboyant Gothic style.
Tests and restorations:
1561 - Following the Protestant Reformation and the ensuing disturbances, the Friars Minor, priests of the city, get along with the Protestant consistory to organize the successive celebrations of the two cults in Saint-Sauveur and Saint-Barthélémy.
1568 - Mayor Pontard raises the people against Catholics. His cousin, Sainte-Hermine, has churches demolished to fortify the city. From Saint-Sauveur, only remains the belfry preserved as a watchtower. The priests of the parish along with other clerics of the city are locked up and slaughtered in the current Tower of the Lantern.
1627.1628 - During the great siege of La Rochelle, the tower allows to watch the fall of the incendiary bullets sent by the besiegers.
1628 - Following the surrender of Mayor Jean Guiton, Catholic worship is restored in the city.
1630 - Construction of a temporary chapel on the site of the old church.
1652 - Reconstruction of a new church with three naves.
1705 - On the night of May 28 to 29, fire destroys part of the building.
1708 - New construction: the church is raised to 18 m.
1718 - End of the works, and new bells.
1794 - At the revolution, the church is put on sale and becomes, due to lack of purchaser, warehouse of the Navy.
1802 - The Church is reassigned to worship.
1887-1900 - New train of restorations: side chapels, organs, stained glasses.
Construction of the sacristy.
1995 - Closure of the Church for consolidation works by the city.
2008 - Reopening of the building at the end of the work.
Description of this church
Architecture:
The church Saint Sauveur is a building with three naves, salient transept in elevation and flat bedside.
From the medieval period, it has kept its bell tower (XVè) and some of the old façade.
The current facade, from 1679, is of Corinthian order.
The choir and transept are covered with rib vaults, the nave and collaterals, brick arches vaults, the span of the tribune and the first of the right aisle are vaulted plaster arches on lattice.
Furniture:

Les premières constructions de l’église Saint-Sauveur :
1152 – Suite à un bref du pape Eugène II, les moines de l’ile d’Aix entreprennent la construction de l’église Saint Sauveur, initialement dédiée à Sainte Madeleine, érigée en paroisse par l’évêque de Saintes en 1217.
1419 – Cette première église est détruite par un incendie.
1462 – L’Eglise nouvelle mise en chantier aussitôt après l’incendie est agrandie sous Louis
XI. C’est la « merveille de la ville », de style gothique flamboyant.
Les épreuves et les restaurations :
1561 – Suite à la Réforme protestante et aux troubles qui s’ensuivent, les frères mineurs, curés de la ville, s’entendent avec le consistoire protestant pour organiser les célébrations successives des deux cultes à Saint-Sauveur et à Saint-Barthélémy.
1568 – Le maire Pontard, soulève le peuple contre les catholiques. Son cousin, Sainte-Hermine, fait démolir les églises pour fortifier la ville. De Saint-Sauveur, ne reste que le clocher conservé comme tour de guet. Les prêtres de la paroisse avec d’autres ecclésiastiques de la ville sont enfermés et égorgés dans l’actuelle Tour de la Lanterne.
1627.1628 – Pendant le grand siège de La Rochelle, le clocher permet de surveiller la chute des boulets incendiaires envoyés par les assiégeants.
1628 – Suite de la reddition du maire Jean Guiton, le culte catholique est rétabli dans la ville.
1630 – Construction d’une chapelle provisoire sur l’emplacement de l’ancienne église.
1652 – Reconstruction d’une nouvelle église à trois nefs.
1705 – Dans la nuit du 28 au 29 mai, incendie qui détruit une partie de l’édifice.
1708 – Nouveau chantier : l’église est surélevée à 18 m.
1718 – Fin des travaux, et nouvelles cloches.
1794 – A la révolution, l’église est mise en vente et devient, faute d’acquéreur, entrepôt de la Marine.
1802 – L’Eglise est réaffectée au culte.
1887-1900 – Nouveau train de restaurations : chapelles latérales, orgues, vitraux.
Construction de la sacristie.
1995 – Fermeture de l’Eglise pour travaux de consolidation par la ville.
2008 – Réouverture de l’édifice à la fin des travaux.
Description de cette église
Architecture :
L’église Saint Sauveur est un bâtiment à trois nefs, transept saillant en élévation et chevet plat.
De l’époque médiévale, elle a conservé son clocher (XVè) et quelques arrachements de l’ancienne façade.
La façade actuelle, de 1679, est d’ordre corinthien.
Les chœur et transept sont couverts de voûtes d’ogives, la nef et les collatéraux, de voûtes d’arêtes en briques, la travée de la tribune et la première du collatéral droit sont à voûtes d’arêtes en plâtre sur lattis.
