The Visit Brazil website (
visit link) informs us:
"Brasil’s main theater house has a monumental facade and features dance, music and opera artists.
The Municipal Theater was created in 1909 and stands out not only for its architecture, but the beauty of its interior as well. The high-end materials used to build the Theater, such as Carrara marble, and its paintings and sculptures turn the Theater into a cultural temple.
With capacity for 2,200 seats, the Theater is Brasil’s main theater house and the country’s only cultural institution to maintain a choir, a symphonic orchestra and a ballet company simultaneously.
Its architecture is rich in details and blends together different styles, such as Baroque and art nouveau. Among such architectural wonders is the 350-kg eagle on the roof and the huge center chandelier inside, made in golden bronze with crystal pendants.
Some other incredible buildings lie near the Theater, which were built by order of King D. João VI after he arrived in Brasil in 1808, such as the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts, whose collection was brought directly from Portugal.
