Merimee source:
A Catholic sanctuary existed since the Carolingian era. Under Charles the Bald, the possession of the church belongs to the Bishop of Charroux (Vienna). Towards the end of the 11th century, Saint-Etienne became the priory of Nieul-sur-l'Autize (Vendée). After the dismemberment of the diocese of Poitiers, in 1317, Saint-Etienne is attached to the bishopric of Maillezais and therefore depends on the archpriest of Ardin. Originally built on a plan in Latin cross, the church saw its architecture change at the end of the Gothic period. It is enlarged on its north side by the addition of a side-aisle which widens towards the east. A flat chevet survives the Romanesque chevet, formerly composed of a central apse and two apsidioles. From the Romanesque era date the vaulted nave in broken cradle, the arms of the transept, the square span under bell tower, covered with a dome on horns and a large part of the western facade. The western door has arched voussoirs decorated with palmettes and six-petalled flowers. The upper part of the bell tower, pierced on each side of a single triple arcature stage, has been redone.

source Merimee :
