Located mainly in the city centre or Cercado de Lima and Rímac areas, the Historic Centre of Lima is one of the main tourist destinations of Peru.

The city of Lima, the capital of Peru, was founded by Francisco Pizarro on 18 January 1535 and given the name City of the Kings. Although severely damaged by earthquakes, Lima was, until the middle of the 18th century, the capital and most important city of the Spanish dominions in South America. Many of its buildings are the result of collaboration between local craftspeople and others from the Old World.
In 1988, UNESCO declared the historic center of Lima a World Heritage Site for its originality and high concentration of historic monuments constructed in the time of Spanish presence.
Our pictures show some of the most important buildings:
1- The Palacio Municipal de Lima or City Hall of Lima in front of the Plaza Mayor, the birthplace of the city of Lima;
2- The Government Palace also known as the House of Pizarro, the seat of the executive branch of the Peruvian Government, and the official residence of the President of Peru. (The crowd attends the Changing of the Guard Ceremony);
3- The Archbishop Palace built in 1924 and the Basílica Cathedral which construction began in 1535, the same year the city was founded;
4- The Basilica and Convent of San Francisco: Aside from a church and monastery it also contains a library and catacombs;
5- The Goyeneche House (Casa de Goyeneche) built in the middle of the 18th century with its balconies, a typical characteristic of colonial Lima.
The coordinates were taken in the center of Plaza Mayor near the fountain.
