Village stocks circa 1900, on the village green, Gretton. Viewed from the green looking south east. The banded ironstone building was a butcher's shop which had its own slaughterhouse at the rear. The building on the right was Gretton Stores run by a Mr Peggs.

"Gretton is one of the few villages to retain its stocks and whipping post, which can be found on the village green. The last recorded use was in 1858, when a villager was put in the stocks for six hours after failing to pay a fine for drunkenness."
