This scenic boardwalk follows the curve of the lakeside and links Oruawhata Drive to the Scenic Motutara Point and carpark on Hatupatu Drive. There are excellent views across Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island and Mt Ngongotaha. Both of these landmarks are remnants of past volcanic activity. The City of Rotorua is contained within a volcanic caldera. The lake itself sits in the collapsed floor of the crater. Behind the walkway, you will catch glimpses of the Government Gardens and Rotorua Golf Course.
The boardwalk protects the fragile ferns and native plants along the marshy lake edge where you can spot Pukekos, Black Swans and other bird life wading in the shallow waters edge.
