The Broken Column memorial is in a busy part of the South Head General Cemetery at Vaucluse. The Broken Column is of polished white marble as a cylinder, sitting atop a cuboidal marble prism with the following inscription:
In Loving Memory of
Our dear Son
George William Firman
Major Royal Australian Artillery.
Served in France with
Heavy Siege Brigade.
Died November 30th 1925
aged 34 years.
beloved Husband of ANGELA
and Father of PATRICIA.
Below that on the bevel of the marble base is, 'In Loving Memory of', then on the vertical surface, 'Charlotte Rose beloved wife of John Firman died 11th July 1932 in her 61st year.'
On a rectangular white marble tablet on the sandstone or concrete square base is the following: 'In Loving Memory of JOHN FIRMAN died 11th October 1941, aged 76 years.'
The Australian War Memorial has a record for a Private George W Firman in WW1, with Service Number 1147, who was awarded the Military Medal in 1916, but I can't seem to find anything for this gentleman.
