Alexander Smyth Woodburn
1831-1904
Born in Ireland, Woodburn came to Canada in 1843. In 1863 he had established a printing and publishing firm on Elgin Street. By 1875 he had his own printing and bookbinding firm which printed the Ottawa City Directory for a number of years. In 1885 he founded the Evening Journal. In the following year, he sold half-ownership to Philip Dansken Ross. A few years later, the printing business was failing. By 1893, Woodburn had sold the rest of the newspaper to Ross, and joined the paper's staff. He maintained his connection with the Journal until his death.
Né en Irlande, M. Woodburn vint au Canada en 1843. En 1863, il lance un firme d’imprimerie et de reliure qui publie le répertoire de la ville d’Ottawa pendant de nombreuses années. En 1885, il fonde l’Evening Journal. L’année suivante, il vend la moitié de l’entreprise à Philip Dansken Ross. Quelques années plus tard, l’imprimerie fait faillite. En 1893, M. Woodburn vend le reste du journal à Ross, et se joint au personnel. Il maintient son lien avec le journal jusqu’à son décès.
