"The International Dog Federation was created on May 22, 1911 to encourage and protect cynology and purebred dogs by any means deemed desirable. The founding countries were Germany (Kartell für das Deutsche Hundewesen und Die Delegierten Kommission), Austria (Osterreichischer Kynologenverband), Belgium (Société Royale Saint-Hubert), France (Société centrale canine) and the Netherlands (Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland).
The First World War ended this federation and it was not until 1921 that the Société centrale canine de France and the Société Royale Saint-Hubert took the initiative to recreate the FCI. The new statutes were adopted on April 10, 1921 and on March 5, 1968, the CFI obtained legal personality by royal decree.
Claiming to be the "World Dog Organization", it is composed of 94 members and partners under contract (one per country) who each issue their pedigrees and train their judges. The CFI guarantees the mutual recognition of judges and pedigrees within its member countries.
Since 2011, the City of Thuin has been designated "World Dog Capital" because the CFI General Secretariat is located in Thuin."
