The Grand Master's Palace is a large square structure located in the center of Valletta. The palace was constructed after Grand Master Pierre de Monte moved the Knights of St. John's headquarters to Valletta, in 1571. Construction of the limestone Grand Master's Palace began in 1579. It was designed in the Mannerist style by architect Glormo Cassar. Over the years the Palace was modified and embellished until it achieved its present Baroque style.
The Palace has two main entrances leading to two courtyards, the Neptune's Courtyard and Prince Alfred's Courtyard. The Neptune's Courtyard contains a statue of Neptune while the Prince Alfred's Courtyard is build around a circular garden area.
