The Steel Building at 125 E. Main is located directly north of the Washita County Courthouse. It was constructed in 1929 for Robert Steele. It is a two-story blond brick building which is currently occupied by a title company, a testament to the long-standing legacy of the Steeles.
A bronze plaque mounted on the front wall of the building reads:
Robert Steele
1865 - 1937
Attorney - Abstractor - Insurance
Established first building on this site in 1902.
Present Steele Building constructed in 1929.
Robert Steele was first mayor of Cordell in
1906 when Cordell formed a mayor-council
form of government.
He wrote the City Charter and layed out the
plan for city government.
Robert Steel helped draft the bill that
Congress passed in 1905 which officially
designated Cordell as the county seat of
Washita County.
Kate Lee Steele, his wife, was one of the five
original founders of the Cordell Methodist
Church.
Through the efforts of my grandparents,
Robert Steele and Kate Lee Steele during the
pioneer days, Cordell and Washita County
became a much stronger city and county.
