This eternal flame monument stands on the walkway to the West entrance of the Washita County Courthouse.

The Washita County Courthouse in Cordell is a beautiful building constructed in 1911. It stands in the middle of Main Street with the road wrapping around it on the north and south.

On the walkway to the west entrance, this is a two-tier concrete pedestal with a metal lantern at the top. A flame is kept burning here 24/7/365. The flame was placed by American Legion Post 134 and the City of Cordell in 1969. A bronze plaque on the pedestal reads:

FLAME OF FREEDOM
This Flame of Freedom
burns eternally, honoring veterans
who served in all wars especially
to those who fought and died that
people of all countries might be free.
This monument was constructed by
Cordell American Legion Post 134
and the City of Cordell
Publicly dedicated
May 29, 1969
