Santorini, Greece was created by the explosion of a volcano leaving behind a water filled caldera surrounded by steep mountains. Villages are scattered on the rim. If the tender takes you to the port of Athinios you can take a bus that uses switchback to climb the steep hillside to the top of the rim.
If you land below the capital city of Fira you have three choices to reach the top of the rim. 1. Use the cable car. 2. Walk up the zigzag path the 600' climb to the summit. 3. Hire a donkey. The second and third choices are not recommended.
The most authentic village is Oia which can be reached by roads once at the top of the rim.
